Are you ready for Winter?

Did you know that last season Whistler saw over 1,500 cm of snow -- the second-highest snowfall on record. In an average season, the resort sees around 1,100 cm of snow.
The exceptional snowfall was caused by La Niña, a pattern of cooler than normal water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean that affects weather systems around the world.
Although the current La Niña pattern appeared to be weakening in the spring, the Climate Prediction Centre at the U.S. National Weather Service now says it is re-intensifying. That could mean another above-average snow season for the Pacific northwest. Now that is something to look forward to!
With knowing that, you also need to keep in mind that this is a great time to start winterizing you home. Here are few simple tips that can help you save a few extra buxs for that seasons ski pass!
1. Fighting air leaks is the biggest part of saving heat energy. Most
people would never consider the outlets on their exterior walls as
possible air leaks, but they are definitely a contributor to heat loss.
While at the hardware store picking up supplies, don’t forget to pick
up foam outlet insulation gaskets. Simply remove the face plate for
your outlets or switches, place the gasket in and replace the face
plate. It is simple, even I can do it myself!
2. Even though your water heater may be indoors, and inside a closet, it's best to buy an insulated cover. This actually cuts down on the cost of heating your water, since the cover helps to retain the heat, making the heating elements inside not have to work as hard.
3. I also put insulation strips on the bottom of all my windows, so when I closed and locked them the seal is tight. It really helped and didn't cost much to do. I hate putting plastic up over the whole window.
4. Changing the direction of your celing fan is simple and effective, it helps move warm air that is trapped on the ceiling, blades should turn 'forward' in a clockwise motion. This movement will push up the air and pull the warm trapped air down the sides of the room improving heat distribution.
5. It's easy to forget to turn down the heat when you leave, I do it all the time, but doing so is one of the surest ways to save money. Most households shell out 50 to 70% of their energy budgets on heating and cooling, so why pay for what no one uses? For every degree you lower the thermostat during heating season, you'll save between 1 and 3% of your heating bill. Make it easier with a programmable thermostat; they are widely available for as little as $50, and the average family will save $180 a year with one.
I do suggest that you pay for your own home inspection before putting your home on
the market. It is good to find out about any hidden problems and correct them in
advance. Otherwise, you can count on the buyer's inspector finding
them, at the worst possible time. Old Man Winter is settling in for a
long chilly season, so act now and have more time to spend on the slopes when the mountain opens.
